An Ordinance Regulating the Operation of Golf Carts on City Streets
WHEREAS, Minnesota Statutes § 169.045 authorizes cities to permit the operation of motorized golf carts on designated roadways; and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds that permitting golf cart operation will benefit residents while maintaining public safety;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERGAS ORDAINS:
Section 1. Purpose and Authority
This ordinance permits and regulates the operation of golf carts on city streets under the authority of Minn. Stat. § 169.045.
Section 2. Permit Required
No person shall operate a golf cart on any city street without first obtaining a permit from the Clerk-Treasurer. Permits shall:
- be valid for one calendar year from date of issue;
- require proof of insurance as specified in Section 4; and
- carry a fee set by the council's annual fee schedule.
Section 3. Operation Restrictions
Golf carts may be operated only between sunrise and sunset, and shall not be operated on State Highway 228 except to cross at a designated intersection.
Section 4. Insurance
Every permit holder shall maintain liability insurance meeting the minimum limits of Minn. Stat. § 65B.48 and shall present proof at time of application.
Section 5. Effective Date
This ordinance takes effect upon adoption and publication according to law.
